alsamixer misidentifies the speaker channel as a headphone. In fact raising one of the headphones channels allows the speakers to work. The problem returns the next time you use the headphones, as the computer will lower the volume to zero once again as you plug out the headphones from the jack.

I've also found that whenever i change the hdmi resolution back to one of the resolutions that the tv originally reported, the audio over hdmi begins to work again. if i again change to the the tv native resolution (set with xrandr), the audio over hdmi stops again. while the audio is not

No love here, with either the top listed Xenial package, nor the 'LTS' at the bottom. Even without either package installed, I am able to get sound via USB to a stand alone DAC and headphone amplifier via Spotify and DeadBeef, but no sound from internet/youtube, through speakers or my DAC/amp. --
