I am re-marking this incomplete due to the lack of additional
information. This bug has already expired and been resolved by the user
by commenting out configuration variables that are not present in mysql
5.7. See bug 1571865 as an example.
As such I do not see this bug as actionable or providing

This helped me to solve the issue:

In /etc/mysql/my.cnf comment the entries so as to have them like:
#key_buffer = 16M
#myisam-recover = BACKUP
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

systemctl status mysql.service
Failed to get properties: No such interface ''
journalctl -xe
No journal files were found.
