Notmuch upstream and Debian maintainer here.
I can't duplicate this problem in Debian, with emacs24 24.5+1-11 and
elpa-notmuch 0.23.7-3 (note in DpkgTerminalLog.txt the same failure
occurs for emacs24 and emacs25). In particular I don't have any of the
compilation warnings that are shown on Ubunt
