I think it is an essential part of the Ubuntu Desktop that there be an audio cue when the login screen is ready for the benefit of users who are blind.
The askubuntu link points out that all you have to do is mute the sound on the login screen to not hear the sound there any more. ** Description changed: ubuntu-desktop package depends on gnome-session-canberra package in such a way that it's impossible to remove gnome-session-canberra without removing ubuntu-desktop. This is wrong, as aforementioned package contains only few loud sounds to be played at system start, and is not an essential part of Ubuntu Desktop. I think it should be in 'recommends' section, not in 'depends'.
