Yes. The easiest and fastest way is sometimes to switch workspace or
minimize all windows. Inconvenient.

Dash to Dock v63 (released on Apr 02 2018) added the new click action
“minimize-or-previews”. IMHO, this is by far the most user-friendly
click action of all supported ones. Unfortunately, this didn't become
the default in Ubuntu 18.10. Currently, the file
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/10_ubuntu
Minimize on click was introduced in Unity Tweak Tool and many users
liked it, personally I see no point in classic dock that does not have
that functionality, clicking constantly on minimize button requires more
mouse work and effort and if I dont use minimize button, but instead use
the overview,
The option is available in the prefs of dash to dock or via gsettings
key. The option was indeed never default behavior in Unity, but we
didn't expose it in any official UI but only ccsm IIRC. I can see Tweaks
growing this option, similarly than ccsm, as the code is already there,

Minimize single windows on click was neither a default behavior in Unity
dock but at least the option to do so became available. I really hope it
will also become available in Canonical-Ubuntu.
As is, many features from Unity dock are missing in gnome-shell-
extension-ubuntu-dock.

I agree with this, if Ubuntu wants to make life easier for users in this
new desktop environment minimize on click is essential to it, dash to
dock fully supports that option so I dont know why it is not included in
Ubuntu dock, I am using 17.10 and I really miss that functionality, also
