For Xerox Workcentre 3225 the solution is:
1. Link the files in /usr/lib/sane to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane,
2. Add the user that needs to use the scanner to the "lp" group.
Otherwise the "Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00" issue persists.

I have installed the samsung driver coming from samsung website but sane
continue to use the xerox driver

Sorry pushed enter too soon. I can make the problem go away by changing
the line in mate-panel.rc from
class "GtkScrollbar" style "murrine-scrollbar"
to
class "GtkScrollbar" style "scrollbar"
which is what is shown e.g. here
I get this same message when I start the Groovy Shell, also under 17.10
