This looks like it is due to the stricter environment used by Wayland
which is the new default display server in Ubuntu 17.10.

As a workaround, log out. Click your name on the login screen then click
the gear button. Choose 'Ubuntu on Xorg' and then enter your password to
log into the traditional display server instead of Wayland.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
