Bingo. After purging "samba-common" and 'apt install samba' no error received and was able to create or access samba shares on the network. The /etc/samba/smb.conf file is created by the samba-common package in its post-install script, and not samba. It's copied from /usr/share/samba/smb.conf. sudo apt update sudo apt -f install Did not fix the problem. Run apt purge samba mv smb.conf smb.conf.old apt install samba Got the same result.
