[Bug 1737639] Re: Touchpad stopped working in Dell XPS13

2017-12-14 Thread Mario Limonciello
It looks like you don't have the associated xorg package installed with it.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-libinput

You should check your Xorg log to see if libinput is active.

Given this initial issue is resolved (touchpad stopped working) I'm going to
close this kernel task.
If there ends up still being another bug related to the performance you should
open a separate bug relative to the libinput package. Feel free to subscribe
Kai Heng Feng and myself to them (although I'll be on vacation so I may not
respond for a while).

Re: [Bug 1737639] Re: Touchpad stopped working in Dell XPS13

2017-12-14 Thread Mario Limonciello
So for what it's worth looking at adopting libinput would likely improve
your touchpad experience.

You should investigate if you are using that after upgrade. It's the
default with 17.10 fresh install but I don't know what would happen with
upgrade.

PS2 mode doesn't support as many features as I2C does. If you still aren't
happy with the performance in I2C mode you should be able to adjust many
options in libinput that can better improve it than switching to PS2 mode
offered.

[Bug 1737639] Re: Touchpad stopped working in Dell XPS13

2017-12-14 Thread Kevin Dalley
This file was a workaround, done outside of packaging. The touchpad has
frequently been a problem over the lifetime of the laptop, through
multiple Ubuntu releases.

The problem historically was that the touchpad was flakey, and would
often freeze, jitter, move all over the place. Many users of this laptop
added the blacklist. I was one of those users.

Here's one reference going back to Ubuntu-14.04:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/593466/xps13-touchpad-issues-
with-14-04-2

Here's a more recent entrance.

https://askubuntu.com/questions/134627/how-do-i-get-the-touchpad-
settings-working-on-a-dell-xps-13-ultrabook

I noticed that I recreated this file on October 27, 2017, probably after
the 17.10 upgrade.

But I have been using this file for years. Hence my slowness at
remembering the file.

Perhaps something changed so that could no longer be blacklisted without
losing the touchpad.

Also, I notice that the touchscreen seems to work. I had it disabled for
so long that I had stopped testing it.

That file is not shipped with standard Ubuntu. Was this an OEM shipped
machine and it came in an oem package? Or was that something you added
yourself?

You can check:
dpkg -S /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_i2c_hid.conf

2017-12-14 Thread Kevin Dalley
The I2C comment gave me a hint, which led to a solution.

But I still have a question of what changed and what can be done to warn
the user about the change.

I removed the file:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_i2c_hid.conf?field.comment=The I2C comment
gave me a hint.

I removed the file:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_i2c_hid.conf

I still have the following lines in blacklist.conf:

blacklist i2c_i801

I don't have XPS 9343 to check right now.

Does the touchpad use PS/2 mode or i2c mode?

I don't see i2c-hid for i2c-DLL0665:01, so I guess something's wrong about your
i2c controller.
Can you give Windows a try? I guess you can observe the same issue under

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.15 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".
