Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. Closing since one since it
sounds like it was a font configuration issue and not one with the pdf
viewer

Just found out that it was caused by files from an old version of font-manager
in my home directory (namely .fonts.conf as well as folders under .local,
.config and .cache)
Removing .fonts.conf resolved the problem for me.
Running evince inside 'valgrind' did work even with the font-manager
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
