For the record, this behavior disappears if I change the rule from: SUBSYSTEMS=="usb", ATTRS{whatever}=="whatever", SYMLINK+="ttyWhatever" to: SUBSYSTEM=="tty", ATTRS{whatever}=="whatever", SYMLINK+="ttyWhatever" The first rule didn't actually match the TTY device at the leaf of the device tree.
