Public bug reported: Model: Toshiba Satellite C55-B5299 CPU: Intel Celeron N2830 / 2.16 GHz RAM: 8GB DDR3L Current OS: Ubuntu 18.04 Stable UEFI Version: 5.10 (Latest)
Problem Description: Beginning in April 2018, my laptop would stay at the OEM logo screen upon being powered on, with no activity except the running fans. I am able to boot into the EFI to change settings. (Which are able to be modified) However, entering the EFI Boot Menu to boot from a device will abruptly power off the laptop. Previous Workarounds: - Entering EFI and selecting "load setup defaults" temporarily fixed the issue until it occurred again at a later date. - Switching from UEFI to CSM and back again temporarily allowed me to boot into the system, as everything functioned normally. Potential Explanation: Notably, this device ran Windows 10, Ubuntu 17.10, and currently Ubuntu 18.04. I am convinced that my EFI is corrupted from a previously-installed Ubuntu release, possibly 17.10, because I am now unable to boot from ANY device in the EFI boot menu. Selecting one, for instance USB or HDD, results in an immediate shut down. This appears to not be a hardware issue because restoring the EFI defaults used to fix the issue. Now, none of the workarounds above will work. I have ruled out hardware problems, because the computer functioned fine after the workaround. The AC adapter works fine, battery holds a charge, and computer would never crash. Even after removing the HDD, the computer still WILL NOT even say "No OS found", as it is unable to boot. Again, everything worked perfectly until I decided to shut down my laptop, only to experience this issue again. Switching to CSM Legacy boot allows me to boot the computer. I have determined that EFI Corruption Is Likely.
