problem doesn't happen anymore! :-)

I'm typing this from :) The version of simple-ccsm in the repos that
Synaptic installs is 0.6.99+git20080224-0ubuntu1 (see
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/simple-ccsm) and compizconfig-settings-
manager is *not* a dependency.

removing the 'private' flag - there doesn't seem to be a core dump or

That should not happen anymore as I just added that dependency
information to simple-ccsm.
