As far as I can see this is an actual bug.

the debian download does use a secure connection for its successful
download.
If I was a programmer I'd dive in and squash this, but unfortunately I

I mis-named the file above- it should have been ttf-mscorefonts-
installer.
Version 3.7 from ubuntu repositories will not download the fonts.
version 3.7 from the debian repositories will download successfully.
Version 3.6 from ubuntu repositories also downloads the fonts
successfully.

update-ms-fonts cannot simply be appended to the postinst and it's already
called from postinst.

Note the "3.7: No such file or directory" above. I get a "3.6ubuntu2: No
such file or directory" instead.
It seems to be a packaging problem to me (the error is generated by
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ttf-mscorefonts-installer.postinst).
