Public bug reported:

Cannot seem to run any DVD when using a xine-backed player in Hardy
Heron. Originally installed Alpha1, however, have installed all updates
as they have been released.

Was able to run under Gutsy Gibbon final version just fine.

Steps to reproduce:
1 - Insert DVD in drive
2 - Choose Applications/Accessories/Terminal
3 - Run xine
4 - Hit g and xine control panel launches
5 - Click on DVD option

Receive errors:

-xine engine error-
There is no input plugin available to handle 'dvd:/".
Maybe MRL syntax is wrong or file/stream source doesn't exist.

When clicking on "More" button I get additional error messages:

The source can't be read.
Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't
contain data (e.g: no disk in drive). (/dev/cdrom0)

Additonally, a window pops up with three tabs (messages, plugin and
trace)

Trace has nothing exciting, just two line referring to 2D_Tex and nothing that
looks like an error.
Plugin refers to a whole bunch of plugins being found, but no references to
plugs not found

The messages screen has seven entries. The third one says:
xine: cannot find input plugin for MRL [DVD:/]
followed by:
xine: input plugin cannot open MRL [DVD:/]

What's interesting is that if I use Nautilus to explore the DVD, and go
to the video folder I can right click on any of the video files and view
them through xine just fine.

xine related packages already installed:
libdvdcss2 v1.2.9-2medibuntu4

I have a lone CD/DVD writer in the system. The fstab line say:
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom0 auto rw,user,noauto,exec 0 0

Here is the text from the Terminal window:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xine

If I try and use mplayer instead of xine I get an error msg:
No Stream found to handle url dvd://1
If using gxine, I get errors about not being able to handle DVDs. If I go into
configuration it says no device for DVD playback. After configuring that to the
proper device I can play DVD in gxine. However, xine-gui still doesn't work.

Totem-xine also refuses to play the DVD. However, Totem-GStreamer works
just fine.
