So. I pinned the working kernel version, updated everything, and like a
moron also updated the Nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers ppa, in
readiness to try the upstream kernel version. Whoops. Now it no longer
logged in at all, freezing in the same place it used to freeze when
sleeping, just

v4.19 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following

I tried this in both X and Wayland, and the same result happens in both.
I think the reported version is wayland
