I have the same issue with a Dell Vostro 200. I had thought it had
something to do with using LVM. I did a clean installation of Edubuntu
7.1. The system boots into a initramfs shell.

What do you mean by screen initramfs ? Could you write down the
complete error message as you see it on the screen, please ?
initramfs is a proper Ubuntu component used during startup, not an
error
message.
