Since you said Ubuntu 18.04 is broken and 18.10 works then we need to identify which kernel version fixed the problem. Per comment #7 we believe this is probably in the range v4.16-rc1 to v4.18-rc8. I suggest starting around v4.17. I vaguely recall sound didn't work on Cherry Trail systems like this until recently.
