Well should have figured. I reinstalled ubuntu 16.04 LTS and then upgraded.

Hi,
Sorry if it was unclear. As I said, initially 'sudo do-release-upgrade'
gave error that I had 3rd party ppa-repositories that need to be disabled,
which I did from settings-->software Afterwards it said there is
an unresolved problem but did not give any reason unlike the last time.
