I get a similar problem. Ubuntu 6.10 worked once, and other versions that I got in a book, but I wanted a later version so I tried to install 7.10. I am sort of new to Linux but I have used other Unix systems in a simple way (find something that works and use it to to develop software). I re-partitioned 3 disks and could probably use an older version or Suse but I wanted to use Ubuntu. I have an Intel processor. I have programmed for a long time but am new to Linux.
