I got it solved. It's enough to add:
Option DDCMode on
to xorg.conf
Now it detects the correct modes, and applies them automatically.

This sounds like an erroneous modeline. Can you attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Also, it's likely this is fixed in a newer version of Ubuntu - can you
test it with a newer version of Ubuntu and post your
