The solution to my problem was given to me in #ubuntu on Freenode.
Kernel parameter radeon.dpm=0. That's dynamic power management. I think
the clue was that everything works fine when the laptop is not plugged
in, so the fine young man probably thought there was a bug in dynamic
power management. D

cause apport-collect to collect useful information (where currently it

I just ran apport-collect 1855024. It had me sign into launchpad and I
selected that my computer should be able to access launchpad for "one
week". Then apport-collect shows a X dialog that says "No further
information collected". I don't think it worked.

Then, after plugging in, I get some amount of time before the computer
goes belly up. For instance, just now, after plugging in, I got perhaps
20 minutes of time to install some packages I like, apply some setup
scripts, install ardour, then it crashed while running sudo apt-get
install ; I hope th

works fine.
