Hi,
we have discovered the exact same issue using an HP Zbook 15 G6 and an
up-to-date Ubuntu 20.04 installation.
- With standard settings, the laptop freezes at the login screen
- nomodeset does not stop the freezes from being happening
- when using snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0 as a kernel paramet
the issue of computer frozen probably is caused by graphic driver,
please add nomodeset in the bootargs or install the nvidia-driver-450
instead of in-tree driver nouveau.
And please install 20.04 and upgrade all packages to the latest version,
I believe the internal mic will work.

Hello,
I suffer from the same issue, I also have HP Zbook 15 G6 with Ubuntu 19.10. I
installed the latest kernel v5.5-rc3 through ukuu utility. Now, I do not have
any sound (nor mic, nor speakers).
Here is the output from dmesg:

Hello, I've not been able to run the 5.5rc kernels.
I downloaded modules / image / headers for the generic version and installed
with dpkg -i each.
The kernel appears in grub boot menu but does not succeed booting.
I reverted to 5.3.0-24-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Thu Nov 14 01:33:18 UTC 2019

Bugs, which is
"I have no internal mic detected.", that is because the internal mic connects
to PCH instead of codec, so it needs the sof driver to enable the internal mic.
Please have a try with latest mainline kernel, and upload the dmesg, the dmesg
will tell us if your machine need sof driver or not.
