Yes, looks like the backport to 5.3 is in progress:

2020-02-20 Thread arno
I am pretty sure, that these mentioned bugs are same issue. Thanks.
I found this enable_rc6 has been removed due to stability issues.
Do you think Ubuntu will backport the fix?

[Bug 1863489] Re: intel grafic i915 driver no power saving states rc6

2020-02-19 Thread Francis Ginther
I believe this is the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1853044 and
possibly https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1856653.

lp:1853044 has test kernels for both 5.3
(https://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp1853044/5.3.0-40.32+lp1853044v202002131655/)
and 5.4 (https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~arighi/LP-1853044/) containing a
patch to fix this. I tried the 5.3 test kernel and powertop is now
showing RC6 usage > 90% when my desktop is idle.

If this solves the problem for you, I'll duplicate this to lp:1853044.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1863489/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[Bug 1863489] Re: intel grafic i915 driver no power saving states rc6

2020-02-16 Thread arno
** Description changed:

- It seems that the i915 intel grafic driver in newer kernels (observed with
5.3) doesn't support energy saving.
+ It seems that the i915 intel graphic driver in newer kernels (observed with
5.3) doesn't support energy saving.
How do I know that? Using powertop shows in idle tab the GPU - and this shows
only : GPU power on 100% - no rc6 or deeper states are used.
For some strange reason also the packet (summery?) shows in all states 0%,
although I can observe the individual CPU cores are in different power states.

The previous parameter enable_rc6 is not existing anymore.
The other possible energy saving parameter enable_dc (if set to 1 or 2)
results in log with:
- setting dangerous option enable_dc - tainting kernel.
+ setting dangerous option enable_dc - tainting kernel.

Any idea what might go wrong there?

powertop:
Take care, maybe you have to scroll down, it is in the middle row below the
cpu-cores
For some strange reason also the packet (summery?) shows in all states 0%,
although I can observe the individual CPU cores are in different power states.

Edit:
I observed that with Ubuntu Mate 18.04 with new (!) installations. My old
installation (kernel 4.15 seems not to be updated to newer version) is not
suffered. I have tested also Linux Mint 19.3. Initially (kernel 5.0 if I
remember right works) but after update to 5.3 not anymore. So I can exclude
hardware as an issue.
