[Bug 1868009] Re: Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering with the Nvidia driver

2020-04-02 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Si Dedman,

Please log your own separate bug by running:

   ubuntu-bug nvidia-driver-440

Best I can tell this one is probably a hardware/connection fault and not
a software bug. Maybe.

** Summary changed:

- Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering with the Nvidia driver
+ Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering with the Nvidia driver (TCL TV
continuously loses and regains HDMI connection)

** Information type changed from Public to Private

[Bug 1868009] Re: Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering with the Nvidia driver

2020-04-02 Thread Si Dedman
Hi folks,
Similar story here, as detailed in comments in this thread:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1184366/lagging-after-update-to-19-10-from-19-04/1184571?noredirect=1#comment2050464_1184571
Then my own post:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1219696/video-lag-after-updating-to-19-10-from-19-04
But no improvements as yet.
Summary of above threads: update from 19.04 to 19.10 started the issue, the
nvidia driver is probably the problem since various kernel changes haven't
helped (currently using 5.6.1). I can't use the nouveau/xorg open driver as
it's limited to 1024*768, and an xrandr bug prevents adding new modes.

Xubuntu 19.10

sudo apt-cache policy nvidia-driver-440

I'm not sure which of Harrison's log files it would be useful for me to post so
please let me know and I'll try to generate them.
I've also noticed the bug is worse in some programs than others. If I hold down
the arrow key in libreoffice, it'll scroll prettymuch normally. Whereas if I do
the same in RStudio (IDE) it'll lag before moving, then pause intermittently.

It's probably a loose or poor quality HDMI connection so try a different
cable to the same TV. Or try the same cable to a different TV.

[Bug 1868009] Re: Xorg high CPU usage and stuttering with the Nvidia driver

2020-03-19 Thread Harrison
I can confirm that unplugging my TCL TV HDMI connection gets rid of the
problem. How strange that it would be reconnecting multiple times per
second. Any thoughts on why or how to proceed?

Also your Xorg log shows the monitor is being repeatedly reconnected a
few times per second:

In case this is due to a bad connection, please unplug and replug the
monitor. Please also try a different cable. It sounds like it's the TCL
TV connection.
