I can confirm that enabling / disabling the Power Manager application
in System - Sessions will cause this behavior to occur.
As an aside, I disabled the power manager after a recommendation by
powertop.

enabling gnome-power-manager is a working workaround on my Ubunntu-8.04
x86 desktop.
the situation was a bit worsened by a hidden entry of gnome-power-
manager in my case. I had to remove .config/autostart/gnome-power-
manager.desktop first to make it appear again.

I think another reason for this occuring may be disabling power
management under 'sessions' (startup programs).
You need to add the 'gnome-power-manager' command (see attachment).

I have to say that the bug has come back to my system. Even with the
apmd service running it takes 1 minute to open the logout menu.

Thanks, it worked also for me. In services I just activated apmd which
was disabled before.

I have the same problem on my PC. If i chancel the dialog and hit logout
again, everything works fine and fast (but this time WITH hybernation-
option)

I figured out the problem is that I disabled the power manager under services.
The power manager doesn't do anything useful on a desktop system, but the
shutdown
dialog talks to the power manager to determine if suspend/resume work.
Therefore the problem is logout is trying to talk to the
