Wingnut, I can confirm that enabling / disabling the Power Manager application in System - Sessions will cause this behavior to occur. enabling gnome-power-manager is a working workaround on my Ubunntu-8.04 x86 desktop. the situation was a bit worsened by a hidden entry of gnome-power- manager in my case. I had to remove .config/autostart/gnome-power- manager.desktop first to make it appear again. is there a place to configure a shorter time(out?) after clicking the logout button till presenting the logout menu? It seems to be 50 seconds. I think another reason for this occuring may be disabling power management under 'sessions' (startup programs). I figured out the problem is that I disabled the power manager under services. The power manager doesn't do anything useful on a desktop system, but the shutdown dialog talks to the power manager to determine if suspend/resume work.
