Stuart, I counted about 80 app icons at Gnome desktop in my Ubuntu. This is not fresh install. But only 1 icon with grey background and this is Files. So it looks absolutely out-of-place. Maybe it could be a good idea if all icons had the same squircle style. But now all other icons have different

You can call it "on a plate" but I think most people would understand the design better as being on a grey background. So yes it's the "plate" that some of us think should be removed.
