I had the same issue:
In order to make exporting to latex work in a fresh ubuntu system you have to
install:
latex(probably texlive), openoffice.org-java-common, a java jre,
openoffice.org-writer2latex
probably you are missing the last one. However, I think this is kind of a bug
in itself.

I couldn't reproduce this problem on my machine with a simple file
exported out as latex. Can you please attach a simple file that exhibits
this problem?
