Public bug reported:

Beginning with at least slrn version 1.0.3+dfsg-3 it is no longer to
connect to a secure news server. The following command fails:

NNTPSERVER=snews://secure-us.news.easynews.com:8000 slrn --create
...
Connecting to host secure-us.news.easynews.com ...
Failed to initialize server
Run-Time Error
Reason:
slrn fatal error:
Failed to initialize server.

While this command succeeds:

NNTPSERVER=news.easynews.com:8000 slrn --create
...
Connecting to host news.easynews.com ...
Connected to host. Posting NOT ok.
Username:
slrn fatal error:
Authorization needed, but could not determine username / password.

The servers for easynews listen on mutliple ports
(https://help.easynews.com/kb/article/11-nntp-server-addresses/) but it
is not possible to connect to any of the SSL setups.

This works fine in Ubuntu 18.04 with slrn version 1.0.3+dfsg-1, although
looking at the changelog it is likely an issue with an underlying
library.
