Those are both different issues to this. To make the debugging process
clear please open new bugs for each of those.

[Bug 1900777] Re: [amdgpu] Screen freeze with AMD/ATI Renoir

2020-12-01 Thread Blaise Mariner
Hi Daniel, the driver that I have with ubuntu's support (the one that is
downloaded automatically) is giving me some problems. No freezes yet
(it's been around 6 hours).

The first problem is that the display does not seem to be claimed.

blaise@blaise-VivoBook2:~$ sudo lshw -c video
[sudo] password for blaise:
  *-display UNCLAIMED
   description: VGA compatible controller
   product: Renoir
vendor: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI]
   physical id: 0
   bus info: pci@:03:00.0
   version: c2
   width: 64 bits
   clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm pciexpress msi msix vga_controller bus_master cap_list
   configuration: latency=0
   resources: memory:d000-dfff memory:e000-e01f
ioport:e000(size=256) memory:fe70-fe77

This I believe leads to the following problems in which the night light
does not work. (when I had the driver installed from the amd website it
did work). And similarly, I cannot attach an HDMI external monitor to my
computer anymore, where previously with the other driver I could.

Please let me know what steps I can take to resolve these issues. I have
gone through the internet and many suggestions just tell me to install
the driver from the amd site. but I do not want something that Ubuntu
does not support or freezes on me. Thanks. Blaise

[Bug 1900777] Re: [amdgpu] Screen freeze with AMD/ATI Renoir

2020-11-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Yes, but you would first need to uninstall the driver you installed from
the AMD website. And I don't know how to do that.

Alternatively, reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. If you find Ubuntu 20.04
doesn't support the GPU then maybe try Ubuntu 20.10 (although that one
is only supported until July 2021):

  https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I would probably recommend staying with Ubuntu 20.04 though, and then
logging new bugs about any problems you encounter. It's supported until
2025.

Oh. Indeed it looks like your amdgpu kernel driver is a custom install:

 amdgpu, 5.6.0.15-1098277, 5.4.0-52-generic, x86_64: installed

Sorry, that makes it something we can't support. :(

2020-10-26 Thread Blaise Mariner
Thanks Daniel, and I will continue posting the prevboot files to see if
there is something that we can pinpoint. As for the amdgpu drivers,
those were not automatically detected when I installed ubuntu (that is,
if I go to the additional drivers, only the wifi chip is detected and
not the graphics displays that were needed to be installed). So I went
to the AMD site and downloaded them myself. This was needed, as without
them I could not attach external monitors, control the display, etc. I
imagine uninstalling these things would result in the same problem.
Thoughts? If not, I will continue to post the prevboot in the future.
Thanks for all the work you do!

Thanks. There are two interesting things there:

* Lots of messages relating to:

  profile="libreoffice-soffice" name="/opt/amdgpu/lib/...

so that suggests a driver issue triggered by LibreOffice.

* A kernel crash in rtl8821ce (wifi).

Unfortunately each issue occurs only once so I can't see a recurring
pattern yet. Maybe start by uninstalling/disabling the AMDGPU driver in
the 'Additional Drivers' app?

[Bug 1900777] Re: [amdgpu] Screen freeze

2020-10-22 Thread Blaise Mariner
Ok will do, thank you. I do only have three extensions (Desktop Icons,
Ubuntu AppIndicators, UbuntuDock), all of which are enabled. Thanks I
will run comment 4 again when the freeze happens again. Thanks.

2020-10-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, that seems inconclusive right now. Please repeat the steps in
comment #4 a couple more times.

Please also open the 'Extensions' app and ensure you only have the three
Ubuntu extensions in there.

Crashed this morning, while only my browser was up, right after booting
it up. Here is the resulting file from the #4 terminal command. Thanks.

[Bug 1900777] Re: [amdgpu] Screen freeze

2020-10-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I should have made it clearer; please don't attach crash files to bugs.
We only need to know their file names right now. To see if any are
relevant to this bug.

Please also remember to run through the steps in comment #4.

I will upload one of the many files that are in the /var/crash
directory. There are 12, 3 different files per crash. Let me know if you
want me to upload another or a different one.

2020-10-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please look in /var/crash for any crash files and tell us what you find.

Also, next time the freeze happens, please:

1. Wait 10 seconds.

2. Reboot.

3. Open Terminal and run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.
