I should have guessed this was gnome-shell, since that provides the GUI,
not GDM...

Could you add the 'journalctl -b 0' log from the system after triggering
the issue?

[Bug 1902918] Re: GDM crashes after upgrade to 20.10 due to apparmor and snap

2020-11-05 Thread Daniel
Thanks for your hints on how to get the crash logs. My laptop crashed a
few more times this morning so I had sufficient opportunity to get logs.

Unfortunately Ubuntu is not creating any logs under "/var/crash" neither
online (step 2) when this issue occurs (I can however see other log
files so generally it works).

As you pointed out in step 3 I commented out the related line in my
"/etc/apport/crashdb.conf" file but it is still not logging anything
there.

If you could point me to other log files in addition to the dmesg and
journalctl which I posted in the ticket I am happy to add them.

2020-11-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1902918] Re: GDM crashes after upgrade to 20.10 due to apparmor and snap

2020-11-05 Thread Daniel
I think I am getting closer to the issue. Yesterday I did a clean
reinstall of 20.10 because I thought something in the update process
from 20.04 to 20.10 had broken. However, even with a fresh 20.10 this
issue persists.

I have the feeling that it may be related to Wayland and HiDPI scaling:
As I am using an external screen I wanted to enable 125% scaling of
Wayland right after my fresh installation. For that I need to enable the
"experimental features":

gsettings set org.gnome.mutter experimental-features "['scale-monitor-
framebuffer']"

Right after typing that command in the console GDM crashed.

As requested by Maciej I attached my journalctl output. As you can see
it is full of errors related to the icons.

Next I will try do disable the experimental features and see if the
problem persists - although this makes my external screen hardly usable
(200% is way too large, 100% to small).

2020-11-04 Thread Seth Arnold
A user in #ubuntu reported something similar:

https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2020/11/04/%23ubuntu.html#t01:11

Wed 04 01:07:21 < signofzeta> that aside, i have a question. whenever I open
the official Discord app (a snap,
if that matters), I'm immediately logged out.
what would cause that?
Wed 04 01:08:12 < spelter> signofzeta: what ubuntu version?
Wed 04 01:08:37 < spelter> signofzeta: also, snaps are a hit-or-miss kinda
thing imho. "oh snap!" *rimshot*
Wed 04 01:08:46 < signofzeta> spelter: 20.04.1 LTS, fully updated, kernel
5.4.0-52
Wed 04 01:09:23 < signofzeta> yeah, I know snaps can snap at you, but this is
new. just started today. may or
may not be related to me installing amdgpu
drivers from AMD, not sure. i can't
read the debugging output because i'm logged off.
Wed 04 01:09:56 < spelter> signofzeta: yeah you should defo see what it's doing
by running it from cli
Wed 04 01:10:19 < signofzeta> tried it, spelter. it logged me out so fast i
couldn't read the output.
Wed 04 01:11:51 < signofzeta> I type "discord" in a terminal (or click the
icon), then i'm immediately back at
  the logon screen.
Wed 04 01:12:28 < signofzeta> yeah, just like that. let me check journalctl
for anything interesting. i haven't
  had time to troubleshoot yet.
Wed 04 01:14:00 < signofzeta> journalctl has nothing for discord. some AppArmor
stuff about the Ubuntu Store, but
  nothing damning.

Perhaps it's unrelated, in which case, apologies, but it felt similar.
