That's why Carla is recommended for installation. It has a graphical
patchbay/midi connection management. :)
Also, you don't need to install Ubuntu Studio to have

I am aware of the great work of ubuntustudio, but
I didn’t mean to say the package should be updated in focal. I just
mentioned it didn’t change since then.
If it can be updated for the next release, that would be perfectly fine!

I tested The latest debian source and it builds just fine for groovy, in
case this helps.

Unfortunately, the version in Focal is frozen, and has been since
February of 2020. No newer version of any package, unless it's either a
security fix or extremely minor bugfix, can be backported. That said, I
can make sure the newer version ends up in Ubuntu going forward.
