Thanks, Timo. Your suggestion brought me to the solution of my problem.
I had the same problem and fixed it by uninstalling xserver-xgl after reading
Timo's post.
After uninstalling it, I was able to log into any Desktop Environment I had
installed (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) without any error messages.

If you get the login screen, it's not a Xorg problem. You have xgl
installed, guessing that the reason lies there.
