Now I can confirm, applying the patch mentioned above brings my PC back
to normal.
Short summary for everyone else who might read this bug report: Download
and save patch as patch.diff and run:
sudo apt-build install --patch patch.diff libgl1-mesa-dri

But it's not yet available. So can anyone point me to an explanation how
to build such a package from source and install it? I'll be able to
patch it myself.

I should also note that we cannot read the crash file in comment #1. To
have that analysed you should run:
ubuntu-bug _usr_libexec_gnome-session-check-accelerated-gl-
helper.126.crash
It looks like it might be one of these crashes in the Mesa r300_dri.so
driver:
I used apport-cli -c to create Bug #1916463 as the suggested workaround
did not really work out. I will add the other requested files there.
Maybe then this bug can be closed as being a duplicate.
