In this case, it has nothing to do with mute. I just can't get any
sound at all from any of the applications, whether Firefox, Amarok, or
whatever else. There is no sound, period. Problem goes a bit deeper
than mute, I'm afraid.

Mute isn't the problem in my case, and the sound is on full.
The system sound works when I log on to Ubuntu.
Please reopen the ticket.

there's ... ah ... a seperate volume control for Rhythmbox, and, um,
well ... it has a mute button.
I must have hit some key combination hot-key that sets RB into instant
mute, and was so surprised by the effect that I just didn't see the tiny
red-bar crossed-out speaker-icon right there
