launching firefox for the first time (ie. while it's not running) works

Could it be that you had an instance of the firefox deb (or another upstream
build) running?
If so, firefox might be trying too hard to detect whether another instance is
already running, but I suppose it's by design.
Good to know that you managed to resolve the issue anyway. I'll close

Removing the snap and reinstalling solved the issue for me. Still I
wonder why it occurred first hand.
