My apologies.
I refer to the (GNOME?) small display which appears when you adjust the
brightness of your screen - attached is a picture of the volume bar
which appears in the same location and is identical, save for displaying
the volume instead of the brightness.
The volume display does not

Which 'brightness display' are you referring to? Are you able to you
produce the bug at will? If so, please provide as detailed as possible
instructions on how to reproduce this bug.
