The problem continues into Natty 64-bit kernel 2.6.38-8-generic
Hardware specific kernel issues are never fixed as I can observe from several
cases, with video adapters being the only exception.
Having said that, the BIOS on Asus laptops is far from being perfect either.

Two and a half years passed and the naughty bug still exists. Asus F5N

I tried the kexec[1] workaround on a ASUS X50N with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic
Koala), it /does/ reboot but then it warns about the fact it can't load
the graphics card driver (nVidia Geforce 7000M) and it asks to start in
low-res mode. I have the proprietary drivers enabled.

Bug still persists on ASUS X50N (F5 Series) with Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic

The laptop just does not display the screen on restart at the normal
level of illumination. On inspecting the screen very closely I can just
make out the usual selection between starting up in Windows or Ubuntu,
and depress the relevant arrow, and enter the username and password and

Things get broken with every new release as usual. Audio, web cam, hot

Just find entries starting with kernel and add the parameter to the
end of the line to make it look like

I found a solution for these issues.
Solve the poweroff problem:
edit /etc/modules
add this line:
power_off=1
To solve the reboot issue:
add to the kernel parameters: all_generic_id
You can turn off the leds with:
sudo echo 0 /sys/devices/platform/asus-laptop/[bluetooth, wlan,...]

not all_generic_id but all_generic_ide. Sorry.

Super! all_generic_ide kernel parameter fixed my reboot problem on Asus
F5N right away. Based on what other reporters say, I beleive this bug
may now be safely marked as fixed.
As to the wireless LED script, it needs further enchancement but
unfortunately could not post to read-only forum Horváth
I would prefer David, but if you must then Mr. Horváth :)

I'm in the same boat. Asus F5N-158, shutdown worked with 8.10 after one
tweak, but restart is stopping at the end. Only the shutdown button
helps. I will try the Jaunty kernel today. If not, is there a
workaround?

Apparently its limited to ASUS Laptops.

this exists with the upstream kernel as well? if so, it would be great
to also open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org . The Ubuntu
kernel team has started providing upstream kernel builds for testing -
i find out by chance, that if i remove the sata hard disk from my
notebook, then i install intrepid to a 4GB pendrive, it reboots!

Just installed Intrepid on an ASUS F5N, and after the install the Live
CD did not reboot, it stayed at Close tray and press enter... forever.
I had to use the power button. The installed system behaved the same, it
does not reboot.

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that
uname-a.log was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an
Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, however that attachment doesn't
appear to be one. Subsequently I've unchecked the patch flag for it.
