Alex, is there a reason you set the status to New? By now the status should not be New any more. It seems to me this is not a bug in linux at all and so it should be changed to invalid. Hibernation requires as much swap space as you have ram. If you don't have enough, that is a system

As Jeremy Foshee requested, If the issue remains, click on the current status under the Status column and change the status back to 'New'. Thanks.. It is perhaps not a bug in Linux, but certainly a problem with Ubuntu: If the system gains more memory, it should adjust the swap space accordingly

There are issues with swap files and hibernation. Simply put they would not work. Resizing partitions automatically is hard to do reliably.. Best option really would be to put the effort into making sure the proper ACPI sleep states work on hardware... -- adding memory breaks hibernate
