Aaron Kurtz hit the nail on the head. After installing nm openvpn stuff it looks like nm was unable to communicate with dbus. NM was saying it couldn't find secrets. After restarting everything worked. I attached part of the daemon log that occured when trying to connect. I have certificate and config made by Ipcop firewall. network-manager- openvpn worked before these latest updates but now it works only from command line with sudo. Confirmed! Had problem getting my connection to work (just installed n-m-openvpn) but I had it working from CLI. After rebooting my connection worked! I had exactly the same experience - although network manager restarted after the installation of network-manager-openvpn, until I actually restarted my machine any attempt to connect through the vpn failed. After restarting, it connected properly, and this time actually displayed something in the NM applet when I tried to connect. This is interesting... after reboot it works now. I installed the VPN support for network manager and the menu options become available.
