Same problem as jim brown, I'm using Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (alpha). Each time I change some parameter using network manager, every instance of my machine's name, siva, in /etc/hosts gets replaced by siva.private, private being the domain name indicated in the General tab. Deleting the domain name
