I've got a Shuttle SG31G5 barebone system with Intel G31 Express
(Bearlake-G) + ICH7 (according to the manufacturer).
I also get X crashes, two or three times on an ordinary day. Switching
to a virtual console doesn't restore the graphics. However, I can
restart the computer blindly by pressing

The bug contains enough enough information I think for the developers to
decide what's the isse. But I'm not sure that the second bug reported in
the comments is the same.

I can confirm the bug ... i have the same randomly
It seems to be caused by fbc (framebuffer compression)
My card is a 945gm.
Here is the diff between two Xorg.log, one when the problem occurs, the
other when it doesn't.
Tell me if you need more information as above.

Thank you for reporting this bug, However, we still need some more information
before we can pass it on to the developers. Can you please attach the output of
the following commands and files:
lspci -nn | grep VGA
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (complete)
lspci -vvnn
sudo ddcprobe
xrandr
It seems to me that your xorg.conf is very short and incomplete. Please run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
If you don't know which option to choose, just press enter to choose the
default option.
By the way, please attach the files next time in separate files
instead of pasting everything
