Are you aware that mplayer can be used with pulseaudio directly? I
suggest you look up the mplayer documentation to find out how.
Why it fails to work properly I don't know, but there is no need to use
padsp with an application that supports pulseaudio directly.

yes, but you miss a 'v'! vmplayer, the player of vmware that do not
works with pulseaudio, at least my version I do not know the beta
