Now when I start up with the external monitor connected, the width of the virtual desktop is set to the maximum even if the largest monitor does not cover it. The height is set correctly. If I start X without the external monitor, the virtual desktop is set to the size of the laptop display. I can use dual head extended desktop even without adding Virtual in xorg.conf. I have 1280x800 display in laptop and 1280x960 external monitor. Although I prefer to set Virtual in xorg.conf to be able to connect an external monitor and configure dual screen after starting X.
