the bug description really sounds like a hardware problem. in no way
mencoder should be able to hang your whole system.
I also see that this is a pretty old report. did you try a newer copy of
mencoder?

This problem is maybe connected to gnome-screen-saver, because when
gnome-screen-saver is off, mencoder works OK.
And this hang happen only when gnome-screen-saver is on and monitor was put to
standby for 1-2 minutes.
