Those files are the logs of the upgrade and will give us more information about
what went wrong.

gcl failed to upgrade
As requested. I hope these help. (Note: after finishing the upgrade to
8.04 through Synaptic, I went into the terminal and used sudo apt-get
upgrade which upgraded to the 8.04 gcl successfully.)
