Unplugging the external monitor without disabling it from xrandr can
cause problems.
type:
xrandr
and you will see a list of the connected outputs:
LVDS, VGA, TMDS, TV (note: the names may vary).
The external screen should be represented by either TMDS or VGA while
your main screen should be
Detecting when an output is disconnected should be implemented in one of
the next release of RandR 1.x.
