this happens to me too, has nothing to do with illegal packages, as error occurs with google-installation-files, too, if one would read this report carefully. I have exactly the same problem with GE5 on ubuntu 9.04. There is nothing proper about the Medibuntu repository. It is not related to googleearth-package, and likely distributes illegal googleearth packages. I can confirm this happens for me. I attach Xorg.0.log for the failed session. The crash happens for both the vesa driver and the nv driver. I get a bit further using the proprietary nvidia driver (no crash, but fails to contact server and reports Error 29).
