Confirmed here, on Kubuntu 8.04.1, upgraded from 6.06 LTS.
As a workaround, you have to click away from the checkbox to see if it
is checked or not, OR set focus to another window.
As long as the checkbox is the last thing clicked in Firefox, AND focus
is on the Firefox window, the checkbox is
